Field Trip Health Policies

Outdoor field trips offer educational opportunities for your child.  This following is to inform you of the Concord Public School Policies based on the Department of Public Health’s recommendations for outdoor field trips.  It is another chance to teach your child ways to stay healthy.

The following safety precautions are to minimize insect bites.  While most insect bites do not cause a person to become sick, there is a slight risk of the spread of illness through mosquito, tick and spider bites.  Prevention, avoidance and early detection are key.  The measures outlined require parent involvement.  Please review them before each field trip.  The attire described is required.  School personnel will neither supply nor apply repellents to students.

  • Wear long sleeves and long pants on all outdoor field trips and when playing in wooded or grassy areas.  Dark ticks show up better on light colored clothing.
  • Tuck pant legs into socks to reduce contact w/ low-lying brush; tuck shirts into pants
  • Wear a hat and sturdy tie shoes or sneakers
  • Apply insect repellent before arriving at school.  Most remain effective for several hours.  Avoid using repellents w/ DEET concentrations greater than 10-15% for children and greater than 30-50% for adults.  Cream, lotion or stick formulas are best.  Avoid products with high amounts of alcohol.  Never use on infants.
  • Health food stores carry natural repellents containing canola oil, eucalyptus, rose water, sweet birch, peppermint and lemongrass.
  • ***Inspect your child carefully for insects, ticks or bites after being outdoors.  Especially note hairy areas of the body such as the back of the neck and scalp line.
If you would like any further information on Lyme disease, West Nile virus, or have any questions, please contact us at the Health Office, or check out  Mass. Department of Public Health or CDC websites.
