Math instruction occurs in small groups based on skill/grade level. Instruction includes extensive use of manipulatives and "math tools" such as number lines, 100 number charts, skip counting strips, visual aids, and strategy charts. The primary program used in this classroom is Saxon Math, which is leveled by grade. Concepts taught include (but are not limited to) problem solving, fact knowledge, data collection and graphing, fractions, geometry, time, money, measurement, skip counting, patterns, comparison symbols, and other skills.
Saxon Math offers continuous review and spiraling of skills, with daily practice in both facts and concepts. Weekly assessments monitor math fact and concept skill progress.
Supplementary materials and programs are utilized as needed, including the TERC/Investigations math program, FASST Math fact practice computer program, and a variety of math games and websites.
