What do our Volunteers Do?
Volunteers are needed to help the library run smoothly and efficiently. Volunteers work in two capacities. Volunteers are needed for each class to check books in and out and shelve materials; additional volunteers are needed for the ongoing project of shelf-reading, that is, keeping books on the shelves in order.  The first task requires your commitment to the class schedule and coming in about once a month; the second is more loosely scheduled so you may come in whenever you like, including during your child's class time.

Signing up to volunteer
Volunteer sign-up forms are included in the Thoreau School back-to-school packet sent to all families in August. To insure everyone comes in frequently enough to learn the ropes, circulation desk volunteers are limited to four per class.  In an effort to be fair, we weigh many factors when drawing up the schedule, including whether a person is volunteering for more than one class. Desk slots are not necessarily filled on a first-come first-served basis, and in some cases we may not be able to place everyone who volunteers for the desk.

Training
New desk volunteers must meet with the Library Aide for  training before their first scheduled session.

Shelf Reading
The shelf-reading option also requires training.  This is a critical part of running the library and is an excellent way to browse our collection.  If you come during your child's library class time, you have the added bonus of seeing your child and helping him or her choose books.

MCAS
During MCAS testing periods in the spring when all specials are shuffled, we request that you come in at your assigned time, even if a different class is scheduled.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

CORI approval is required
All volunteers must be CORI-approved.  Please contact the main office for more information on CORI procedures.

THANK YOU!
